Electrodiagnostic medicine

Electrodiagnostic medicine is used to diagnose, evaluate, and treat a variety of neuromuscular and neurologic disorders and impairments. This method uses an electromyography test or nerve conduction study to help determine whether or not you have a nerve or muscle injury, damage, or condition. The common reasons for electrodiagnostic medicine are pain, hand symptoms, nerve injuries and complications, paralysis, or muscle weakness or spasms.

There are two types of electrodiagnostic tests.

The first is electromyogram (EMG), which is where they insert a small, thin needle into several muscles that send electrical signals into an EMG machine. This allows for studying of the electrical activity in your muscles.

The second type of test is a nerve conduction velocity (NCV) where small electrical currents are sent to your nerves to determine how well the body’s electrical signals are traveling and whether or not there are any abnormalities by attaching electrode patches to your skin on specific parts of your body.

EMG and nerve conduction testing allows us to study and evaluate the electrical function of your nerves and muscles. We're able to see problems such as nerve damage in specific parts of the body, carpal tunnel, sciatica, generalized nerve problems or certain primary diseases of muscle which can all be diagnosed by these tests.
